Matchbox Modern
By modern, I mean the post-lesney era. This includes the ownership by Universal, Tyco, and most recently Mattel. I only really collect realistic looking castings, mostly licensed versions of real production street cars, so there won't be a ton of fantasy stuff here. I also collect some series cars which will be broken down here.
Matchbox in the modern age, from around 1988 and on has been a mixed bag to me. Lots of uncollectible castings yes, but also some very cool stuff not found in other makes. Lately, there have been some very cool realistic castings, so i have been more active in picking some up.
Some collectors refer to a golden age, around 2006, when Matchbox finally seemed to figure it out, dumping the crazy stuff and bringing to market a ton of cool older vintage cars, such as the Cadillac Hearse, the Karmann Ghia, the Volkswagen T2 transporter, and a ton more. I tend to agree with those folks, and I have been after a bunch of those ever since.
